Last Wednesday Abigail and I headed up to Kansas City to go to my parents. We hadn’t planned to leave until Thursday evening, but Jim ended up having to travel to Atlanta for business so we went ahead and headed on up early. Friday morning my mom, my best friend, my mom’s friend, baby Abigail, and I all headed for Indiana to stay with my grandparents and go to the Vera Bradley outlet sale. It was an eventful trip full of stomach bugs, downpouring rain, Dora the Explorer, and snack food.
We arrived Friday evening, unpacked and got settled. We ate our delicious Pizza King pizza(Abigail helped herself to 2 whole pieces) with my grandparents, aunt, mimi, great grandpa, and everyone else. I had been feeling ill ever since I woke up and couldn’t enjoy my pizza at all….and then got to enjoy it a second time that night. Fun. We went to bed shortly after dinner
Saturday morning we got up, got ourselves ready and went to one of our favorite places to eat in Anderson. Gene’s Root Beer! I’m sure it was fabulous but I was still feeling puny and couldn’t enjoy it at all. My heart was broken!! After lunch we drove to Ft. Wayne for the sale. We met up with my Aunt Kelli and Mimi at the Coliseum where the event was. Last year, we waltzed right on in. No lines. No waiting. This year was totally different. They had us in super long lines and we waited for over an hour just to get inside to shop. Once inside there were tons of women(hundreds and hundreds) and even more merchandise. We shopped for a while and then headed to check out….where we waited and waited and waited. After the sale we went to eat at an italian restaurant called Casa! and then headed back to my grandparents house in Anderson. Abigail did AMAZING through the whole experience. She started to get pretty sick of her carseat, but otherwise she did wonderful waiting in line and loved riding around in her stroller looking at all the ladies while they shopped/shoved/dove into bins for purses, lol!
On Sunday, it was the last day of the Vera sale and they mark items down further than they have been. We had hoped maybe it would be easier to navigate and that we could find some great deals. IT WAS CHAOS. There was probably 3 times the number of people there than there had been on Saturday. We waited even longer to get in and to checkout and the shopping itself was difficult. The aisles were filled with people and it was hard to get where you wanted to go. Definitely an experience!! When we got back to my grandparents that night we got to visit with my Aunt and Uncle and cousin for a while which was awesome. I ordered a Pizza King Pizza to take back home to Jim, and we stopped at Gene’s Root Beer again. I was feeling so much better, so I wanted to be able to enjoy one of the meals I had so been looking forward to! And it was completely fabulous and I was so happy.
We left on Monday morning to drive back to K.C. We made great time, there wasn’t any rain, and everyone felt good again so the drive home was much more enjoyable!! Abigail and I had dinner with my parents and then when it was her bedtime we headed back to Joplin so A would sleep in the car.
A few fun Abigail things from the trip:
The portable DVD player in the car was about the greatest thing ever. Once toys lost their excitement and Mom just wasnt cutting it for her anymore we could put on a Dora or her princess movie and she would be happy as a clam watching it. It was perfect for traveling.
She discovered the wonder of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. At the end they sing this song that goes “hot dog hot dog hot diggity dog” and she invented this hilarious dance and would do it over and over. The show doesn’t even have to be on, but if I start saying those words she will start dancing her “hot dog dance”. I need to get a video of it on here because it is to die for.
She was pretty clingy to me this trip. She wouldn’t go to anyone except occasionally Grammy(my mom). She would wave and smile and blow kisses to everyone, and she would let them sit next to her or feed her snacks, but she didn’t want anyone to hold her besides me.
We slept in the same room and that was a challenge. Anytime I moved, I swear, something in her little brain notified her and she would wake up screaming for me to hold her or pull her into bed with me. I always refused and she learned pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to happen, but it didn’t stop her from trying anyway. I would lay completely still waiting for her to go back to sleep and that dang kid would roll around for 45 minutes. Let’s just say, so happy for us to be back in our own beds in our OWN rooms.
During the sale, she had been snacking on Goldfish until they handed us a big pink bag to put the purses in. Suddenly, the goldfish were so uncool and she wanted nothing else but that pink bag to hold.
We’re getting back to our normal routine yesterday and today, but she is doing great. I thought we were going to have to retrain, retrain, retrain. With eating, snacking, napping, sleeping, show watching all being disturbed for almost a week and only one parent to help enforce rules, PLUS constant attention from Grandparents I thought we were in for it. But, she has done fabulous being back in her own house and has gone right back to her regular little self. Whew!
